Complete IOB LBO Preparation Plan

1. First understand the selection process

For the recent IOB LBO recruitment, the stages are:

Online Examination → Local Language Proficiency Test → Personal Interview → Final Selection

The online exam has:

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude306060 min
General/Economy/Banking Awareness404030 min
Data Analysis & Interpretation306060 min
English Language404030 min
Total1402003 hours

There is negative marking, so accuracy matters as much as speed.

2. What you should study

A. Reasoning & Computer Aptitude — 60 marks

This is one of your highest-weightage sections.

Must-do topics

Puzzles & Seating

  • Linear seating
  • Circular seating
  • Floor-based puzzles
  • Box puzzles
  • Month/date-based puzzles
  • Scheduling
  • Selection/distribution
  • Comparison puzzles

Logical Reasoning

  • Syllogism
  • Inequality
  • Coding-decoding
  • Blood relations
  • Direction sense
  • Order/ranking
  • Input-output
  • Statement & assumption
  • Statement & conclusion
  • Cause & effect

Computer Aptitude

  • Computer fundamentals
  • Hardware/software
  • Operating systems
  • Internet
  • Networking
  • MS Office
  • DBMS basics
  • Cybersecurity
  • Memory/storage
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Digital banking technology

Target

Don’t merely solve questions. Aim for:

Easy question → <30 sec
Moderate question → 45–60 sec

For puzzles, learn to identify the correct puzzle first rather than spending 10 minutes on a difficult one.

3. Data Analysis & Interpretation — 60 marks

This is another 60-mark section, so give it serious attention.

Quantitative topics

  • Simplification
  • Approximation
  • Number series
  • Percentage
  • Ratio & proportion
  • Average
  • Profit & loss
  • Simple & compound interest
  • Time & work
  • Time, speed & distance
  • Partnership
  • Mixture & allegation
  • Probability
  • Permutation & combination
  • Mensuration

DI

You should become comfortable with:

  • Table DI
  • Bar graph
  • Line graph
  • Pie chart
  • Caselet DI
  • Missing DI
  • Arithmetic DI
  • Data comparison

Priority

If your maths is weak, don’t start with advanced topics.

Follow:

Percentage → Ratio → Average → Profit/Loss → SI/CI → Time & Work → TSD → DI

A huge amount of banking-exam arithmetic becomes easier once percentage and ratio are strong.

4. English Language — 40 marks

You don’t need extremely complicated English.

Focus on accuracy + reading speed.

Important topics

  • Reading comprehension
  • Cloze test
  • Error detection
  • Sentence improvement
  • Fillers
  • Para jumbles
  • Phrase replacement
  • Vocabulary
  • Word usage
  • Grammar

Daily English routine

Every day:

30 min reading

  • Editorial/business article

20 min vocabulary

  • 10–15 useful words

30 min questions

  • RC + grammar + cloze

Don’t memorize 50 random words every day. Learn words in sentences.

5. General / Economy / Banking Awareness — 40 marks

This can make a huge difference in your final score.

You should prepare three layers.

Layer 1 — Banking basics

Know these extremely well:

  • RBI
  • SEBI
  • NABARD
  • SIDBI
  • EXIM Bank
  • IRDAI
  • PFRDA
  • NPCI
  • Monetary Policy
  • Repo Rate
  • Reverse Repo
  • CRR
  • SLR
  • MSF
  • Bank Rate
  • OMO
  • Inflation
  • GDP
  • Fiscal deficit
  • Balance of payments

Layer 2 — Banking awareness

Study:

  • NPA
  • SMA
  • Basel norms
  • Capital adequacy
  • Provisioning
  • Priority Sector Lending
  • Financial inclusion
  • KYC
  • AML
  • CASA
  • NIM
  • CRAR
  • Digital banking
  • UPI
  • NEFT
  • RTGS
  • IMPS
  • BBPS
  • AePS
  • CBDC/e₹
  • Account types
  • Loans
  • Credit/debit cards
  • Cheques
  • Negotiable instruments

Layer 3 — Current affairs

For the last 6 months before the exam, concentrate on:

  • RBI announcements
  • Banking appointments
  • Bank mergers/acquisitions
  • New banking products
  • Government schemes
  • Budget
  • Economic Survey
  • Monetary Policy
  • Important reports/indexes
  • Business/economy news
  • International financial institutions
  • Awards
  • Important appointments
  • Important government initiatives

6. Special focus: Indian Overseas Bank

This is where many candidates make a mistake.

Don’t prepare only general banking awareness.

Prepare IOB-specific information for the interview.

Know:

  • History of IOB
  • Headquarters
  • Tagline
  • MD & CEO
  • Executive leadership
  • Major business segments
  • Digital banking initiatives
  • Recent financial performance
  • Deposits
  • Advances
  • CASA
  • NPA position
  • Profit
  • Capital adequacy
  • Branch network
  • International presence
  • Major products
  • Government schemes implemented by IOB
  • Recent announcements
  • Awards/recognition
  • IOB’s strengths and challenges

The official IOB careers page is the best place to monitor recruitment updates.

7. Local Language Test — DON’T IGNORE THIS

This is particularly important because LBO recruitment is state/local-language oriented.

IOB’s recruitment information specifies proficiency in the relevant local language, including the ability to read, write and speak it.

You should practise:

Reading

Read a newspaper/article in the local language.

Writing

Practise:

  • Paragraph writing
  • Simple applications
  • Sentences
  • Numbers
  • Names/addresses

Speaking

Practise:

  • Self-introduction
  • Customer conversation
  • Basic banking conversation
  • Giving directions
  • Explaining a simple banking product

If you already studied the required language in school, check the notification carefully for the applicable documentation/exemption rules.

8. Interview Preparation

Don’t wait until the written result.

Start interview preparation at least 3–4 weeks before the exam.

Prepare answers for:

Personal questions

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why banking?
  • Why IOB?
  • Why LBO?
  • Why should we select you?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What is your weakness?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Why public sector banking?

Banking questions

Be ready to explain:

What is NPA?

Difference between NEFT and RTGS?

What is repo rate?

What is CRR?

What is CASA?

What is KYC?

What is financial inclusion?

What is priority sector lending?

What is a balance sheet?

What happens when RBI increases repo rate?

IOB questions

You should be able to answer:

Why Indian Overseas Bank?

What do you know about IOB?

What are IOB’s major businesses?

What challenges do public sector banks face?

How can an LBO increase CASA deposits?

How would you acquire new customers?

How would you handle an angry customer?

9. 90-Day Study Plan

If you have around 3 months, use this structure.

Days 1–30 — Foundation

Daily 5–6 hours

SubjectTime
Quant/DI1.5 hr
Reasoning1.5 hr
English1 hr
Banking Awareness1 hr
Current Affairs30 min
Computer30 min

Goal: finish the complete syllabus once.

Days 31–60 — Practice

Now reduce theory and increase questions.

Daily:

  • Quant/DI: 40–50 questions
  • Reasoning: 40–50 questions
  • English: 30–40 questions
  • Banking GA: 50 MCQs
  • Current affairs revision
  • 1 sectional test

Goal:

speed + accuracy + question selection

Days 61–75 — Mock-test phase

Take:

1 full mock every alternate day

After every mock, spend at least 1–2 hours analysing it.

Make three lists:

🔴 Questions I didn’t know
🟡 Questions I knew but got wrong
🟢 Questions I solved correctly

The yellow category is the most important.

Those are marks you are losing because of calculation, reading, rushing, or poor strategy.

Days 76–90 — Final revision

No major new topics.

Revise:

  • Banking awareness
  • Current affairs
  • Formulae
  • Important puzzles
  • DI types
  • Grammar rules
  • Computer awareness
  • IOB information
  • Previous mistakes

Take 1 mock almost every day, provided you are analysing each one properly

10. Ideal Daily Timetable

If you can study 6 hours/day:

Morning

6:30–7:00
Current affairs

7:00–8:30
Quant/DI

Afternoon

2:00–3:30
Reasoning

Evening

5:00–6:00
English

Night

8:00–9:00
Banking/Economy Awareness

9:00–9:30
Revision/error notebook

If you only have 3 hours/day, do:

1 hr Quant/DI + 1 hr Reasoning + 1 hr GA/English, alternating the last two subjects.

11.What resources should you use?

Don’t collect 20 books.

You need:

Quant

One good banking arithmetic source + previous-year questions.

Reasoning

One good reasoning source + previous-year questions.

English

One grammar source + daily reading + banking-exam questions.

Banking

One banking-awareness source + RBI material + current affairs.

Current Affairs

One monthly current-affairs compilation is enough if revised properly.

Most important

Previous-year questions + mocks > collecting study material.

12. Score Target

The exam is out of 200.

I would personally prepare with a target substantially above the expected cutoff rather than aiming merely to qualify.

A useful preparation target:

150+ = strong target
160+ = excellent target

But don’t treat these as guaranteed cutoffs—the actual cutoff can vary by state/category/vacancies and candidate performance. Recent IOB LBO cutoff information has indeed shown state/category variation.

13. Your most important strategy

If I were preparing for IOB LBO from today, I’d divide my effort roughly like this:

30% → Quant + DI
25% → Reasoning
20% → Banking/Economy + Current Affairs
15% → English
5% → Computer
5% → Interview + Local Language

And I’d change that distribution according to mock-test performance.

The golden rule:

Don’t study for 8 hours just to feel productive.

Instead:

Study → Practice → Test → Analyse → Fix mistakes → Repeat

That cycle is what will improve your score.

One thing I would NOT do

Don’t prepare for IOB LBO exactly like a normal IBPS PO exam.

The LBO role has a strong local-market/customer-facing component, so you need three things simultaneously:

Banking knowledge + aptitude + local customer/business understanding.

The official IOB recruitment information confirms the importance of the local language component, and the recent LBO pattern gives substantial weight to reasoning and data analysis

  • SC/ST/PwBD (Only Intimation charges): Rs. 175
  • GEN/EWS/OBC- Rs 850
  • Fee is non-refundable and to be paid online.
