Selection Process for CPCB Recruitment 2026

  • CPCB Recruitment 2026 application Screening / Shortlisting based on eligibility and relevant criteria.
  • Written Test may be conducted for shortlisting, if required.
  • Document Verification.
  • Interview.

Your preparation plan from TODAY

I would divide your preparation into 4 stages.

Stage 1 — 24–25 August

Eligibility + application + syllabus setup

Stage 2 — 26 August–1 September

Core technical preparation

Stage 3 — 2–5 September

CPCB/environmental + technical revision + mock tests

Stage 4 — 6–7 September

Final revision + application verification

STEP 1 — Do this TODAY

Before studying, determine exactly which post you should target.

The current notification information gives these broad requirements:

Scientist-B

First-class Master’s in Environmental Science/Natural Science or eligible engineering/technology degree, with the prescribed GATE >90 percentile or NET-JRF requirement and relevant experience. There are 12 posts.

Scientific Assistant

First-class Master’s in Environmental Science/Natural Science or eligible engineering/technology degree, with the prescribed GATE >90 percentile or NET-JRF requirement. There are 13 posts.

Field Assistant

12th Science with minimum 55%, plus knowledge of water/wastewater sampling and sample preservation. There are 8 posts.

Data Entry Operator

First-class B.Sc/BCA, plus MS Office skill test and typing requirements: 45 WPM English and 35 WPM Hindi.

The senior Scientist posts require substantial experience/publication/technical-report requirements, so they aren’t simply open competitive-exam posts.

Do not assume you are eligible just because your degree sounds related. The exact notification should be your final authority.

STEP 2 — Your CPCB core syllabus

If you are targeting Scientist-B / Scientific Assistant, I would make the following your core syllabus.

A. Environmental Chemistry

Master:

  • Water chemistry
  • pH
  • alkalinity

  • nitrogen cycle
  • phosphorus
  • heavy metals

  • organic pollutants
  • toxic compounds
  • oxidation-reduction
  • atmospheric chemistry

You should be able to answer both:

“What is BOD?”

and

“Why does high BOD indicate organic pollution?”

B. Water Pollution

This should be very high priority.

Study:

Sources

  • Domestic sewage
  • Industrial wastewater
  • Agricultural runoff
  • Thermal pollution
  • Mining
  • Urban runoff

Wastewater treatment

You need to understand:

Preliminary → Primary → Secondary → Tertiary

and the purpose of:

  • Screening
  • Grit removal
  • Primary sedimentation
  • Activated sludge process
  • Trickling filter
  • Secondary clarifier
  • Aeration tank
  • Biological treatment
  • Disinfection
  • Sludge treatment

Also learn:

BOD removal → biological oxidation → microorganisms → aeration

C. Air Pollution

This is another high-priority CPCB area.

Study:

Major pollutants

  • PM10
  • PM2.5
  • SO₂
  • NOx
  • CO
  • O₃
  • NH₃

Control devices

Know the working principle and applications of:

  • Cyclone separator
  • Electrostatic precipitator
  • Bag filter
  • Scrubber
  • Wet scrubber
  • Venturi scrubber
  • Catalytic converter

A common interview question is:

“Why is an ESP used?”

You should be able to explain it clearly in 30–60 seconds.

D. Solid Waste Management

Study:

  • Municipal solid waste
  • Industrial waste
  • Hazardous waste
  • Biomedical waste
  • E-waste
  • Plastic waste
  • Construction & demolition waste

Understand:

Generation → segregation → collection → transportation → processing → recovery → disposal

And:

H. Environmental Laws — VERY IMPORTANT

Don’t just memorize names. Understand what each Act does.

Start with:

1. Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974

Know:

  • Purpose
  • CPCB role
  • SPCB role
  • Consent mechanism
  • Pollution control
  • Penalties
  • Powers

2. Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981

Know:

  • Purpose
  • CPCB/SPCB functions
  • Air pollution control areas
  • Consent
  • Standards

3. Environment (Protection) Act, 1986

Know:

  • Why it was introduced
  • Central Government powers
  • Environmental standards
  • Rules/notifications under it

Then study the major rules/regulations concerning:

  • Hazardous waste
  • Solid waste
  • Plastic waste
  • E-waste
  • Biomedical waste
  • Construction & demolition waste

I. CPCB itself

You absolutely need to know the organization you’re applying to.

Learn:

CPCB = Central Pollution Control Board

It is a statutory organisation under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It was constituted under the Water Act, 1974 and was subsequently entrusted with functions under the Air Act, 1981.

You should be able to answer:

  • When was CPCB established?
  • Under which Act?
  • What is its relationship with SPCBs?
  • What are CPCB’s functions?
  • What is CPCB’s role in water pollution?
  • What is CPCB’s role in air pollution?
  • What are National Ambient Air Quality Standards?
  • What are water-quality standards?
  • What is environmental monitoring?
  • What is consent to establish?
  • What is consent to operate?
  • What is environmental clearance?
  • CPCB vs SPCB?

STEP 3 — Technical preparation method

Don’t simply read textbooks for 10 hours.

Use this cycle:

Learn → Recall → Questions → Revise

For every topic:

1 hour: Learn concept
30 min: Make short notes
30 min: Questions
15 min: Recall without looking

For example:

BOD

Learn:

  • Definition
  • Principle
  • Test conditions
  • 5-day BOD
  • DO measurement
  • Calculation
  • Factors affecting BOD
  • Difference between BOD and COD

Then close your book and write everything you remember.

That’s much more effective than rereading.

Your daily schedule

If you can give 6 hours/day, follow this:

TimeWork
2 hrTechnical subject
1 hrEnvironmental laws/CPCB
1 hrMCQs
1 hrRevision
1 hrInterview/current environmental topics

If you only have 3 hours/day:

TimeWork
90 minTechnical
45 minCPCB/environment
45 minMCQs + revision
